Queen Family Photos at Devil’s Backbone

There’s nothing quite like photographing families surrounded by the natural beauty of Colorado’s foothills, and this Devil’s Backbone family photo session was pure joy from start to finish. Mom, Dad, their energetic three-year-old Bowen, and their lovable dog Grizzly met me at the Devil’s Backbone Open Space in Loveland, CO, ready for an evening filled with laughter, adventure, and plenty of exploring.

From the first moment, Bowen’s energy was contagious. He raced down the trails, stopped to examine every rock and stick, and giggled nonstop as Grizzly bounded beside him. His curiosity and excitement set the tone for the session — fun, relaxed, and full of life. I love sessions like these because they allow a family’s true personality to shine. We didn’t rush or pose too much; instead, we followed Bowen’s lead, capturing those candid moments that make family photos so meaningful.

The backdrop of Devil’s Backbone was breathtaking — golden light filtering through the grasses, the rugged rock formations glowing at sunset, and the wide-open views stretching across Loveland. It’s one of my favorite spots for family photos in Northern Colorado because it offers that perfect mix of natural beauty and space for kids (and dogs!) to run free.

As the session came to a close, we surprised Bowen with a giant lollipop — the perfect reward after all that exploring! His face lit up instantly, and the bright swirls of color made for some of my favorite shots of the evening. It was the sweetest way to end a fun, high-energy session filled with laughter, love, and a little bit of adventure.
